Curve: The venue to celebrate Leicester's cultural festivities

Wed 20 Mar 2013

Visitors are being invited to join in and experience Leicester’s rich and diverse cultural heritage at Curve this year as part of the theatre’s on-going Community Engagement Programme.

Throughout 2013, the theatre will be presenting a vibrant mix of free performances and workshops to celebrate many of the cultural festivals that are being held across the city.

Next week, Curve will host a week-long celebration of Holi, the Hindu festival of colours and to celebrate Easter, a selection of free family-friendly events will be taking place including storytelling in association with Leicester Library Service and a fun-filled children’s Easter craft workshop linking to the Northern Ballet’s children’s production of Ugly Duckling, at Curve on 28 March.

From 15 – 20 April, Curve will be amongst the venues in Leicester taking part in the city-wide St George’s Day festivities, including a ‘How to Slay A Dragon’ combat class for children. Curve will also be the hub venue for the upcoming Spark Festival, celebrating children’s art and theatre from 29 May – 9 June.

Other recent festivals marked at Curve have included Chinese New Year in February, which featured a range of participatory workshops from the mystical art of calligraphy to an intensive Kung Fu session.

Curve’s week of Holi inspired activities will take place from 25 – 30 March and include a colourful free event programme curated by Suba Das, Curve’s Associate Director of Community Engagement.

Visitors will be able to participate in the diverse aspects of the Hindu culture, from the decorative art of Rangoli to watching energising dance performances by Nupur Arts, one of Curve’s new Affiliate Community Groups.

Suba Das, Curve’s Associate Director, Community Engagement commented:

As well as a theatre, Curve offers a dynamic venue for the local community to celebrate, discover and take part in a range of Leicester’s cultural events throughout the year – and is now becoming a recognised hub for many the city’s biggest festivals.

“For the upcoming Holi festivities, Curve will be awash with the colours and flavours of this vibrant festival. Visitors will experience dazzling sarees decorating Curve’s mezzanine, multimedia film showcases, henna hand painting and traditional dance performances, through to Indian inspired dishes in Curve Café.”
