CURVE'S LEGALLY BLONDE TAKES TOP INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL AWARDS

Curve’s production of Legally Blonde The Musical has taken two top awards at the prestigious Daegu International Musical Festival Awards in South Korea. The Made At Curve production won the highest award for Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Lucie Jones as Elle Woods. The accolades were handed out at an awards ceremony at The Daegu Opera House earlier today.

Following its run at Curve, Legally Blonde The Musical directed by Curve Artistic Director Nikolai Foster, played to over six thousand people in South Korea as part of The 10th Daegu International Musical Festival from June 25 to July 2. The production was presented at the festival with theatre producers Richard Darbourne Ltd.

The wins mark another success for Curve in establishing its reputation as a leading UK theatre producer, flying the flag for Curve and Leicester both nationally and internationally.

Curve Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster said in a joint statement: “It was a huge honour to take Legally Blonde to South Korea and work with the phenomenally talented team at the Daegu Opera House. We feel incredibly proud of the work we create here in Leicester and to share it with audiences in Korea, made this a truly rewarding cultural exchange. To be recognised with these awards is the perfect end to a remarkable journey with this production.”

Legally Blonde The Musical was also nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Jon Robyns and received two nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Tom Lister and Lawrence Robb.

Legally Blonde: The Musical tells the story of when the beautiful and popular sorority sister Elle Woods packs up her pooch and bags herself a place at the prestigious Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her boyfriend. But what she finds there is so much more.

Lucie Jones plays Elle Woods. Her theatre credits include Cosette in Les Miserables (West End and O2 Arena), Meatloaf in We Will Rock You (International Tour) and The X Factor Arena Tour. Her television includes Midsomer Murders, The Sarah Jane Adventures and she was a finalist on The X Factor. She was a soloist on The X Factor charity single ‘You are Not Alone’, which reached No. 1 in the UK charts and on charity single ‘Confidence Is Consciousness’. Lucie is also an official rugby anthem singer for Wales and England.

Nikolai Foster is Artistic Director at Curve. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, he grew up in North Yorkshire. Nikolai trained at Drama Centre London and at the Crucible, Sheffield. Since taking up his post in January 2015, Foster has directed Legally Blonde (also at the Daegu International Opera Festival, South Korea); Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s adapted by Richard Greenberg (running in the West End until 17 September); Roald Dahl’s The Witches (also on tour in the UK & at the Lyric Theatre Hong Kong); Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire; Shakespeare’s Richard III; Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good; a performance to celebrate the reveal of the tomb of King Richard III at Leicester Cathedral and Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing (a co-production with Nottingham Playhouse & on UK tour).
